- Passover
Vs 36 He smote all the first-born in their land,
the first issue of all their strength.
God punishes Egypt little by little to allow time for repentance
Wis 12:2 Therefore thou dost correct little by little those who trespass,
and dost remind and warn them of the things wherein they sin,
that they may be freed from wickedness and put their trust in thee, O Lord. KJV
Israelites are at risk, same as Egyptians
Blood on doorposts, roasted lamb, unleavened bread, dressed for quick flight
Pattern of plagues: Moses tells Pharoah that plague will occur that they might know that the Lord is God, the Lord sends the plague, Pharoah relents, plague passes, Pharoah hardens/heavy heart, refuses to let the Hebrews go
Pharaohs’ heart found wanting in demands of justice and truth
Sin and holiness cannot cohabitate. Egyptians were glad when Hebrews left. During the Exodus Yahweh fed, watered, clothed, and taught his people.
It will prove to be harder to get the Egypt of out his people, than it was to get his people out of Egypt.
Egypt was the world power (3000 – 900) BC – until Assyria conquered her Egypt.
Until Joshua & Caleb (80yrs) lead the children of Israel into the Promised Land calling the giants of the land, “bread for us” Num 14:9 Only rebel not ye against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defense is departed from them, and the LORD is with us: fear them not. KJV
We get blinded by idols, counterfeit, lacking full goodness God has for us. Allow ourselves to embrace freedom presented to us. Christ has set us free.
VII. v 44 And he gave them the lands of the nations;
and they took possession of the fruit of the peoples’ toil,
45 to the end that they should keep his statutes,
and observe his laws.
Prov 13:22 A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children,
but the sinner’s wealth is laid up for the righteous.
Statues & laws serve to foster a relationship (deeds and words) with the Lord. So long as one is in relationship with the Lord the gates of hell will not prevail and one will have life and it to the full. Jn 10:10
- Personal Application
2 Chron 20:20 in spite of plagues, celebrate praise, thanksgiving
Only remedy. The plagues seem so awful, loving God to a nation, loving father saving his children from oppression and deceit. Redemption is so necessary in so many ways.
Paul (assuming he is the author of Hebrews) fathers correct their children Heb 12:3-11
Frustrating we have to make mistakes in order to learn.
