Psalm 118 The Lord is Good III

IV Personal Reflection

RSV Title A Song of Victory (of Resurrection)

My initial response, The Lord is Good. How Jesus must have felt reciting this psalm shortly before His betrayal, torture, execution, and resurrection by both the ecclesial (Jesus had very harsh words for them, He knew their treachery) and secular authorities.

Why is the Lord good?

Mercy endures forever.

Out of distress, the Lord answered and set free

All the nations surrounded me v 10 (NB Opening remarks) in the name of the Lord (who made heaven and earth) I cut them off

When I was falling, the Lord helped me.

I shall not die but I shall live and recount the deeds of the Lord. I have not been given over to death.

He (The Lord) answers his prayer and has become his salvation.

The Lord has given us light.

Restatement: The Lord is good because his mercy endures forever. Jesus was vindicated but not in the way expected by ANE Jews.

Repetition, song, poetry in simple sense repeating main points. Seen goodness, deliverance God further proof of His enduring love.

Can remember being disciplined and world against you, God is with me, encouragement event the past 2 years. In spite of shootings, Nigerian Church attack, God is with us.

  1. Cross references to Sacred Scripture, Read it as a whole Scofield AKJV, commentary

Let those who fear the Lord say,
“His steadfast love endures forever.”

Ps 19:9 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever:
the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.

The Lord is on my side; I will not fear.
What can man do to me?
Heb 13:6 So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.

11 They surrounded me, surrounded me on every side;
in the name of the Lord I cut them off!

Ps 88:17 They came round about me daily like water;
they compassed me about together.

12 They surrounded me like bees;
they went out like a fire among thorns;
in the name of the Lord I cut them off!

Deut 1:44 And the Amorites, which dwelt in that mountain, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and destroyed you in Seir, even unto Hormah.

Reading the Bible, one doesn’t realize what is being referred to. Symbolism, multiple uses, OT & NT, is wonderful to get connections.

People have haters, doing something right, a correlation to modern culture.

Become my salvation. Jesus becoming like us, bring salvation to us by becoming one of us. Sharing flesh of humanity and the pain attached to it to save us.

14 The Lord is my strength and my song;
he has become my salvation.
Ex 15:2 The Lord is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation:
he is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation;
my father’s God, and I will exalt him.

Isa 12:2 Behold, God is my salvation;
I will trust, and not be afraid:
for the Lord JEHOVAH is my strength and my song;
he also is become my salvation.

17 I shall not die, but I shall live,
and recount the deeds of the Lord.
Ps 6:5 For in death there is no remembrance of thee:
in the grave who shall give thee thanks?

Hab 1:2 O Lord, how long shall I cry,
and thou wilt not hear!
even cry out unto thee of violence,
and thou wilt not save!
